How to Set Up Text Reminders
Whenever we make an appointment with a patient, we should ask if they want a text reminder. OpenDental sends test reminders by an e-mail process. Based on the patient’s cell phone carrier, we add an e-mail address to the guarantors file for a text to be sent out automatically by the coordinator in her nightly confirmation process.
- Go to Guarantor for the family and double click on the “Patient Information” section.
- In the “E-mail” field you can enter multiple e-mail address separated by a comma.
Every address in here will always get an appointment confirmation for family appointments according to our appointment confirmation policies.
3. Use the list below to know the proper e-mail setup for each carrier (Click here for printer list).

If a carrier not listed here, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SMS_gateways for addresses to try. If it works let Dr Baird know to add it to the list.
- As the receptionist and coordinator check the office e-mail account, they will look for returned e-mails/texts to let us know whether or not this process is working correctly.
- If the patient has both an e-mail and a text, they will receive a reminder by both methods.
- Make sure to update the patient chart, noting when you asked about text reminders so we don’t bother the patient. Click on the family tab, then double click on the text section and enter the date.
