Anesthesia
Nitrous
- Normal air only has 21% Oxygen.
- The antidote for Nitrous is Oxygen so Nitrous is one of the saftest tools for analgesia and anxiolytic as it is administered with its antidote.
- Contraindications include: Pregnancy & COPD- We’re ok with kiddos.
- Normally start pt around 35% and triturate.
- Make sure to tell pt symptoms if it is to high (nausea)
- It is advisable to not use on a full stomach to lessen symptoms of nausea
Shots
- Infiltration ideal for all teeth except lower adult molars (Septocaine drug of choice if pt weighs enough as it is 4% rather then 2%).
- IA Blocks are good for lower adult molars or entire quadrants of anesthesia (only 80% successful, so care must be taken to ensure adequate anesthesia)
- Septocaine is safe for blocks and on all patients over 60lbs (8yrs old) per Dr Malamed & Christensen
- Septocaine to be used for all SOAN injections
